Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 cup buttermilk (warm)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 8 oz cream cheese (full-fat, softened)
- 2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine warm buttermilk with active dry yeast; let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy. In another bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, eggs, and softened butter. Mix until combined.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap or a damp towel, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- While waiting for the dough to rise, mix softened butter with sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it into a rectangle about half an inch thick. Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the dough.
- Roll up tightly from one long edge into a log shape and cut into twelve equal pieces. Arrange cut-side up in a greased baking dish.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and let rolls rise for another 20 minutes while heating. Bake for 25 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before drizzling with cream cheese frosting.
